CORRIDOR HISTORY

Boulder Highway, or State Route 582, is a major 15.4-mile-long arterial located on the east side of the Las Vegas Valley. The highway was built in 1931 with the original purpose of connecting the Five Points area (the Charleston Boulevard and Fremont Street intersection near Downtown Las Vegas) to Railroad Pass in Henderson, and was later extended to provide access for the construction of Hoover Dam.

At one time, Boulder Highway was the only road to connect the downtowns of Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City. Throughout its history, it was a heavily traveled and vibrant corridor, lined with motels, casinos, and other businesses, and has several signalized and unsignalized access points along the route. The extension of the U.S. 95 freeway in the 1980s led to a slowdown in business activity along the corridor.

Due to this change, most motorists are currently using the corridor as a City street, with average trips of three miles or less in length. The Reimagine Boulder Highway project will address these and other new traffic patterns while providing improved transit options and facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians, with an overarching focus on enhancing corridor safety for all users.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The proposed design and construction concept aims to transform the 7.5-mile segment of Boulder Highway between Tulip Falls and Wagonwheel Drive. The complete streets design will include improvements for all modes of transportation including dedicated, center-running transit lanes with enhanced stations,  landscaping enhancements, improved sidewalks, dual cycle tracks, lighting and  future opportunities for open spaces.

Separated modes of transportation

Mid-block crossings & dual cycle tracks

Improved lighting & sidewalks

Potential for open space & parks

PROJECT CONCEPT

The Reimagine Boulder Highway project's design concept will include separated modes of transportation and the incorporation of mid-block crossings for pedestrians and cyclists with center-running transit. Center-running transit lines have proven to be safer for pedestrians as their walking distance to the transit stop is cut by 50 percent as compared to curbside stops. The center-line transit shelters and designated transit lanes offer better protection from vehicles in the travel lanes. It is a more efficient system as vehicles and the transit vehicle itself will not have to compete for space along the curb. Vehicles are allowed to travel unimpeded by stopped buses and buses will not have difficulty reaching their stop due to right-turning vehicles or commercial trucks stopped at the curb.
